Holly Bloggy Christmas

I participated in the Holly Bloggy Christmas Secret Santa Exchange this year. I had so much fun trying to figure out what to do for Caitlin over at Kindergarten Smiles. With not ever meeting her, I had no clue what to give her. I stalked her blog, her pinterest and even wrote a secret email to her teaching BFF Lauren to see if she could give me some ideas. I had already made a picture frame for her but wanted to send a little something extra so found out she has this slight obsession with sprinkles so sent her a few containers of them! I hope she liked what I sent her! This is the picture frame I made for Caitlin.

Thank you to Caitlin over at Ms. Preppy and Sarah over at Kentucky Kindergarten Korner for putting this together and organizing everything!

Although my secret santa gift arrived broken (insert very sad face here), I still appreciate the thought. Thank you Sandi! (I don't know if she has a blog?) Your enclosed card was very sweet. Thank you for thinking of me and hope your holiday was wonderful!

Merry Christmas to All and to All a Goodnight!

Wow, where did the time go? It has been forever since I have had time to post on this little ol' blog. I had to work up until Friday, December 23, went to Disneyland the weekend of the 17th (so my son could propose to his girlfriend), and then on top of all this, I came down with a HORRIBLE cold/Sinus infection and placed on antibiotics. UGH! I am so looking forward to my 2 weeks off. We don't go back until the 9th of January. (Insert VERY HAPPY DANCE here!). It has been a hectic 2 weeks that is for sure.

I hope each and everyone of you had a wonderful Christmas.

2nd Post for Kindergarten Smiles Give-Away

Yes, I love Caitlin's blog and she is having a give away that I REALLY would LOVE to win!!! So this is hard for me to do, having to tell everyone to go over to her blog and enter the give away! (less chances for me to win, WOW, that sounds so selfish! :-) But seriously, go to her blog and start following her. She has FANTASTIC ideas and GREAT units to purchase in her TPT store.

More Sparkles Sightings

Just a quick update on our special "ELF". The kids are absolutely loving him. I can't wait for tomorrow when they see him having a "Tea Party" with the baby doll.

SPARKLES HAS ARRIVED!

On Monday I introduced my kiddos to "Elf On A Shelf." All I can say is if you don't have an Elf on the Shelf, run to your nearest Target and get one! The best $30 bucks I ever spent. Ok, plus the $10 for the DVD so I guess the best $40 bucks I ever spent on my classroom. Wonder if I could submit my receipt to the district office for "supplemental curriculum material"? Ummm.. probably not!

I started out the morning as usual but "delivered" a package from the North Pole to the office before the kiddos arrived. Then after school had started, I asked our office manager if she could page my room and say over the speaker that I had a "special" delivery that needed to be picked up right away and it was from the North Pole. I wish I had my camera on and taken a picture of my little guys faces. They were SO EXCITED. We all marched down to the office to pick up our package and they could hardly wait to get back to our room so we could open it. I have never had a straighter line or a quicker one at that! We sat at the table and opened our letter from Santa instructing us what to do. I read the story and my students could hardly contain themselves. They were already trying to shout out names (4 of my students are speech and language delayed but the were certainly throwing out sounds!) I loved it. We narrowed our list down to 4 names. One of my non-language kiddos actually said "apple" clear as day. I felt like a very proud momma! We had Sparrow, Sparkles and Jax to choose from. After voting, our little magical elf was named Sparkles. And what a character this little guy is. I think we are going to be cleaning up a lot of messes!!! :-)

After he was named and placed on my desk (he wasn't even there for 10 seconds, he was already touched. OH MY GOSH! You would have thought the roof fell in. Two of my students faces turned so ashen I thought they were going to pass out. They yelled and I mean "yelled" at Owen for touching him. Telling him he will be "freezin" (I think they meant Frozen) and will not be able to tell Santa what they want. Okay... here is where Mrs. H comes to the rescue.... I told them that first of all, let's have a quiet voice and to please tell Owen you are sorry for yelling at him (only I can do that).. just kidding, and we might be okay because we need to have our "North Pole Breakfast" first to celebrate Sparkles coming to our class. I told them that we will leave Sparkles a snowball (frosted doughnut) and if he ate it before we got back from recess then we will know he is not "freezin" (frozen)! Whew... quick thinking payed off on that one!

So here are just a few pictures of our little Sparkles "hanging" on the pocket chart and sitting in our tree, which he will have lights wrapped around him tomorrow! He is going to be quite the little trouble maker I think! I am truly having so much fun with this and the kids have talked to him everyday already. And I mean "talk" to him. They are sitting in front of him telling him what they "NEED" for Christmas. I love it. Even my non-speakers are sitting there uttering sounds. I think I will come up with a new visitor every month just to hear my guys "talk"!

Wow.... I could go on and on.... I love them ALL!!!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..........

I planned to get so much more done during this Thanksgiving break but I ended up coming down with a horrible sinus infection and was in bed until Wednesday night!  Why is it every holiday break I come down with something?  I have yet to have a fun or productive break!  This is the first day I have been able to actually sit at my computer and manage to get something done.  I did manage to get a little Math Center done so I thought I would share it with whoever wishes to download it.  My brain is still foggy as the antibiotics have not kicked in yet so this is the best I could do for now! :-)

The first part of the center is counting the objects and then placing the correct number next to them and the second half is an AB, AAB, ABB pattern strips.  I have copied mine on cardstock and laminated them so we can use them for the entire month of December.

Hope you like them!

Wow... I am honored!

I am so honored to be one of the MANY WONDERFUL blogs that was chosen to be an A+ Blog.  I am so thankful to be given this award and to be among all the wonderful "teacher blogs" where I have been able to gain so much valuable information, ideas, concepts and words of wisdom.  I am so THANKFUL to have stumbled across a blog back in July that set me on my own journey of blogging.  I cannot express in words the difference it has made in my teaching career.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Just a little "Thanksgiving Write the Room" Freebie!

I will place words with pictures all over the classroom that correspond with the sheet and they have to walk around the room to find the matching word.  Once they find the word, they have to trace that word in the color that matches the color of the word/picture card.

Here is a copy of my FREEBIE!  Have fun!

Looks like Turkey Time in our class!

We have hit the holiday's running hard and I don't think it will stop until December 23rd!.  We are so busy with making great stuff, learning about sharing, being thankful, and playing that it seems like there is not enough time in the day to get everything done.  These are the items that we have managed to get done and placed up on the walls.  Just thought I would "share" them with you.  We are having our "thankful" feast on Friday.  We will be making our own butter, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pies.  My students are so excited!  I LOVE this time of year and I just wanted to say "thank you" to all of you out there in bloggy land for so many GREAT and WONDERFUL inspirations and ideas.  You all make my teaching come alive! :-)

Sorry about the quality of some of the pictures.  My room has TONS of windows and I get the worst glare no matter what time of day I try to take pictures!

Our Big Green Monsters

I know this is late but I just had to share these.  For our "Trick or Treat" party we decided to decorate cupcake tops using the Go Away Big Green Monster theme.  I must say, the kiddo's LOVED this idea.  As I read the book they had to follow along with me and put that "part" on their monster.  I did see a lot of it going in the mouth though.  It was absolutely hysterical.  I will definitely do this again next year.

Door Hanger

I made this door hanger because I have so many OT's, PT's, SLP, Principal, Teachers, parents etc... coming in to the class at all times.  I printed on cardstock then laminated.  It has worked out great!  Now everyone knows where to find us!

GOBBLE, GOBBLE BIG FAT TURKEY

I just purchased this unit on TPT from Kim Adist.  She has a blog called the KinderGals.  These are two very amazing women!  I LOVE their products and ideas.  "When I grow up I want to be them!"  Oh shoot, I am already grown up... Well, at least I can dream right?

I just purchased it and already printed, cut, glued and laminated the Five Big, Fat Turkeys book.  Oh my goodness, I cannot wait to use this in my class tomorrow!  Here is a picture on their blog that shows the book.  Trust me, you will want to buy this unit after you see it!  Thank you ladies!  You make my job just that much easier!

Is it FRIDAY yet?

Funny thing, as I was preparing to write this posting, I stumbled over to Mrs. Wills Kindergarten and read her post for the day and it made me feel so much better as I thought it was just me feeling like the "teacher" had checked out of her room and the kiddos had "checked" in.  I actually said out loud today, "Where is the teacher for this class"? and funny thing is, one of my higher level SDC Kinders said, "Mrs. H. you are so silly, you are right there"!  I certainly didn't feel right there!  It's almost Friday.  I keep telling myself, "hang in there".  I sure hope that Halloween doesn't ever fall on a Monday as long as I am teaching.  If so, I will plan a "sick" day for myself the day after or maybe the rest of the week after!  Fall break couldn't come soon enough!

The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything VS The Big Green Monster

Okay, I was look for ideas for the book " The Big Green Monster" and as I blog stalked (as I am always doing) I of course became distracted.  VERY easily for me to do as I am beginning to think that perhaps I have BLOG ADHD! I love to use the book, "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" and came across this writing activity originally posted by Collen Gallagher @ www.teachingheart.net.  I used her idea and modified it for my students so I thought I would share.  In fact, I am going to make one for every book I do now.  I LOVE this idea.  It really touches on so many Core Standards.  Print awareness, sequencing, matching.....

I start out by reading the book while my Kindergarten students follow along with me while I read the book and use my magnetic board pieces.  After reading the book several times, I give each student an instrument to use that represents the sound of the "clap, clap" or "stomp. stomp" etc... and every time we say that phrase they get to make the sound that goes along with it.  What child does not like to make noise?  Even my students with Autism love this believe it or not!

Hopefully you will enjoy my little freebie... now BACK to The Big Green Monster!!!

Freebie Monday!

Another little "Candy Corn" Freebie.  Yes, I really do like Candy Corn.  I know so many of you have expressed how you don't really care for them but I am one of the few who really do!  So, here is the Candy Corn Alphabet that I will be using with my students.  I will introduce the letters to them, then they will use them in an independent station to put all the letters in order.

Happy Halloween!

Another little FREEBIE!

I am on a "ROLL" here.... I LOVE this time of year and Halloween has to be one of my favorite holidays to celebrate.  Of course, I celebrate the "CUTE, FUN and YUMMY" stuff not the scary stuff.  I have been making a Halloween Unit and since my little special kinders need SO MUCH Fine Motor skills, I thought I would make a Halloween Trace the line page and Scissor Skills page.  My kiddos are so low academically this year that we need to practice these skills everyday.  I have a few that can write their names but my Non-verbal kiddos still cannot hold a writing tool with a pincer grasp.  They are still using the fist grasp.  Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither were my Kinders!  We are plugging along!  Thought some of you could use this for a "fill-in" when they finished their work faster than the others.  No matter what skills you have, you can always "Fine Tune" the ones you got!  At least that is what I tell my students! Enjoy!

I don't know why I have such difficulty posting on here.  Sometimes it will post the picture and sometimes it will not.  Also I notice when googledocs downloads my documents, they appear smaller.  ANY HELP FROM THE DOWNLOAD GURU'S would be so appreciated!  :-)

Haunted House Halloween Counting Mats FREEBIE!!

I found these cute little bat and ghost erasers in the Target Dollar Spot and wanted to make some kind of counting Mats for my students.  This is what I came up with.  Please enjoy the free download.

Happy Halloween!

Farmyard Freebie!

I have been doing a farm unit this week and have been working on my own "farm unit".  I have to keep my ideas pretty simple due to the type of class I teach but I think with any 5 year old, I have found they LOVE to roll the dice.  I decided to make some so they wouldn't go flying across the table, take an eye out or hit me in the head (at least if they do, it won't hurt as much since they are made out of cardstock!)  Here is the first FREEBIE of my unit with more to come!  Please feel free to leave a comment! :-)

We are LOVING our DonorsChoose.org items!

My students cannot get enough of "playing" with our new kitchen sink and dressing carousel.  Every minute they are asking me, "When is it time to play in the kitchen"?  I love it. (Although I am STILL the one that has to put away the dishes just like at home!)  I am so thankful to the DonorsChoose.org website for accepting my project and to ALL my wonderful friends, family and anonymous donors that made this project possible.

Halloween Word Freebie!

Trying to put together my Halloween Unit for my Kinder Class and decided to make a Halloween Word sheet that I will be cutting and laminating.  I will use it in my pocket chart center.  I am making several copies and the kiddo's will have to match the words.  Hope you enjoy the freebie!

MIA... and Back to School Night

Although I have been MIA on the postings, I still have been a daily "blog stalker"!  I cannot believe how much I rely on your blogs  for fabulous ideas and information.  I would not be able to be a successful teacher without all of you.  I truly LOVE each and every one of your blogs.  Thank you!!

We are having Back to School Night tomorrow (I know, it is really late this year) but I made a new information sheet to share with my parents and thought I would share it with you.  PLEASE, I would LOVE any feedback from any of you.  If you can believe it, this is my FIRST ever Back to School Night.  I am fairly nervous but all the other teachers at my school are telling me I am going way over board but I like to be prepared!  I also have made a card that I am attaching to a cupcake to give to each of my parents.  I just want them to know that I truly care for each and everyone of my students and I am committed in providing them with the best I know how!

Please head over to one of my favorite blogs to enter her WONDERFUL giveaway. She has reached 60 followers and is being extremely generous ! She is a wonderful teacher!!!!

DonorsChoose.org Package

I was pleasantly surprised this morning when I opened my classroom door to see boxes of some of the items that arrived from my DonorsChoose.org project. I wanted to stop everything and put them together right then and there but, I had to teach the entire day before opening the boxes. It was like waiting to open presents that sit under your Christmas tree. I didn't get them all opened and put together yet but I am working on it! I feel so honored to have been chosen for my project to be funded and know that it will enrich the learning environment for my students. Just thought I would share some photos of what I have received so far!

Assessment Sheets

http://www.box.net/shared/vc2sf8x4cv9ggotjb0v0

http://www.box.net/shared/0528b4ydaz0fpsoiebpj

I just made up some assessment sheets for my SDC Kindergarten class.  They are not fancy but thought I would share with you anyways.  I need a way to track my student's progress at least 3 times per year and for IEP goals so thought I would make these and keep them in their cumulative folder.

Be Prepared!

As a special education teacher if I have learned one thing it is "Be prepared to be UNPREPARED".  My first 2 weeks of school have proven this theory.  I spent my whole summer preparing my WHOLE year's worth of lesson plans, wrote them, copied them, made all the worksheets that goes with them only to find out after meeting my special kinders that I clearly have to MODIFY, MODIFY, MODIFY everything I planned.  Oh, did I mention that MODIFY is also another word that is at the top of my teaching vocabulary? It is a good thing that I have learned to be flexible too! Okay, that is word #3 on my teaching vocab.  But, as a teacher I know that everyday is a learning day for me too!  We make the best of it, smile and remember tomorrow is always a new day!

Hope everyone is having a great school year so far!

First week almost over!

T.G.I.F. never sounded so good!  The first week has been very challenging to say the least.  The lack of communication from the transportation department is going to be the death of me.  I am actually screaming at the top of my lungs in my head right now.  Good thing this isn't hear-a-vision!  3 of my students were left on a bus for 40 minutes this morning.  We are not talking typical children either.  My students are 5 year olds with severe special needs.  I had called transportation 3 times asking where the bus was and was told that the bus will be there.  Well it was there alright.  Parked in front of the school for 40 minutes and NO ONE bothered to tell me.  (My students are dropped off in the back next to my classroom).  I was NOT a happy camper about that!  Then, this afternoon 2 buses were late.  The kids get out at 2:50 and one bus decides to show up at 3:20 and the other one shows up at 3:45.  Almost 1 hour late.  She tells me that she has 17 other students to pick up and take home before she can pick up ours.  ARE YOU SERIOUS?  Needless to say, I will be speaking to transportation tomorrow.  I usually do not complain about things but this was not a good way to start out the year.  I felt just horrible for my poor little guys sitting on a hot bus for 40 minutes.  We are in Northern California and our temperature this morning at 9 was already in the high 80's and this afternoon we stood out there and it was 101.  Maybe it was the heat that got me all steamed up!  Here's hoping tomorrow will be a "Cooler" day!

Look Who Arrived At My House On Saturday!

I was so excited to get my Pete the Cat.  I opened him and set him out on my kitchen island and then my husband and I left to spend the weekend with some friends in Reno.  My darling son's girlfriend sent me pictures of Pete over the weekend with the cutest captions.  Thought I would share one with you.  Here is Pete sitting with a beverage from our favorite sandwich shop and her caption was, "Pete the Cat was rockin his "Beach Hut" soda".  When she sent this to me, I laughed so hard.  Pete had a great weekend!  :-)
